New technology can make a new recycled plastic wheelie bin in a minute

7 August 2023

Pact Group is producing its Sulo household wheelie bins faster than ever with new state-of-the-art equipment recently installed at its manufacturing plant in Braeside, Victoria.

The fully automated injection moulding, blending and material handling machinery is capable of making one wheelie bin every 60 seconds and incorporating more recycled plastic content in the manufacturing process.

The plastic bins can be made with up to 80% locally sourced recycled content, depending on the colour, with darker colours such as black enabling the highest levels of recycled content to be used.

Pact recycles old and damaged waste and recycling bins and lids, and HDPE plastic bottles and containers to make the resin needed for the new Sulo bins used by households around the country.

The household wheelie bins are used for general waste, recycling, food and garden organics (FOGO), and glass collection by local councils across Australia.

Pact operates among the largest and most highly automated plastic injection moulding plants in Australasia and has to date delivered more than 20 million wheelie bins to local councils and other customers.

Pact manufactures household bins ranging from 60 litre to 360 litre capacity, and 1500 litre commercial bins.

The new Sulo bin manufacturing equipment is part of a $76 million upgrade to Pact Group’s packaging facilities around Australia and is supported by the Australian Government, Department of Industry, Science and Resources through $20 million in Modern Manufacturing funding, as part of the Modern Manufacturing Strategy.
